Overview

Soshite Hikari, nestled on Lincoln Road in the heart of Addington, Christchurch, offers a refreshing take on Japanese cuisine that balances homestyle comfort with quality. This cozy spot makes a strong case for casual dining with a distinctly local twist, catering to those seeking quick, hearty meals without sacrificing authenticity.

The star dishes deserve special mention. The Teriyaki Chicken Don stands out with tender, well-glazed chicken served over perfectly steamed rice, delivering a satisfying umami punch. For ramen enthusiasts, their Tonkotsu Ramen captures the rich, creamy broth essence pivotal to the dish, paired with fresh toppings like the ramen egg that elevates the experience. Complementing these are lighter options like the Seaweed Salad, which adds a refreshing contrast to the more robust flavors.

The atmosphere is unpretentious and inviting. Its simple decor creates a homely vibe, making it ideal for both solo diners and casual groups. The dining area’s modest size encourages a warm, friendly interaction with the attentive staff, noted often for their welcoming service and quick turnaround from order to table—usually around ten minutes, an appreciated speed during busy lunch hours or after a day exploring Christchurch.

This eatery appeals broadly, from locals craving an affordable, dependable meal to visitors wanting a bite of Japanese flavours without the fuss. Portion sizes are generous, defying the expectation that economical Japanese food means skimped servings. Moreover, the beverage selection, including house-made takes on classic soft drinks and a range of fresh juices, complements the dishes well and adds a layer of refreshing balance.

While Soshite Hikari’s authenticity may not transport you straight to Tokyo, it offers a genuine taste experience anchored in consistency and value. Its location in Addington is convenient for those navigating Christchurch, though the understated exterior suggests it’s a hidden treasure worth seeking out. With a menu that blends crowd-pleasers like gyoza and takoyaki with signature mains, this restaurant excels in delivering straightforward, comforting meals that resonate well beyond the plate.

I went to this Japanese restaurant — it didn’t feel fully authentic, but it was decent. The prices were very cheap, and the portions were generous. It’s close to where I live, so I’ll probably go back for a quick Japanese night.

Only thing that was disappointing was that more people weren't inside enjoying the awesome food. Prices were outstanding and had me expecting shrinkflation-sized portions, but for less than $30 I had a feast. I suggest you get a signwriter to make the place stand out!

tldr; homestyle good food, $13 for a meal, decent portions, 10 mins from ordering to recieving food visited here twice, likely with many more in the future. the place is small and easy to miss, glad I didn't the portions were good enough to keep me filled till dinner without giving me a food coma all the mains on the menu are $12.80 at the time of writing (21/03/2025) and its unfathomable that I can get a meal at this price the decorations are simple and give off a homely vibe, and the staff are friendly too the waiting time from ordering to recieving the food was around 10 minutes i would highly recommend visiting and supporting this establishment
